The Major League Soccer Commissioner, Don Garber has shut down the idea of the league adopting a relegation and promotion system.

Speaking against the backdrop of the City of Houston being named as one of the host cities in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Don Garber said the MLS chief executive said that the momentum of the league is headed in the right direction. “ the league has enormous momentum, we started with 8 teams but now we will soon have 30 teams. We had no soccer stadiums but now we have 27, we have massive and well-organized developmental facilities all over the US and Canada. No one expected Major League Soccer to be where it is today but it still has a long way to go” he reiterated.

On the issue of the league adopting a relegation and promotion system format, Don Garber added “ I don’t think you will see it anytime in our lifetime. At the end of the day, you have to think about how sports are organized in our country, it is structured differently from the rest of the world, not every country has a relegation and promotion system but it is just different here because we have to develop this sport from the scratch and I don’t see the promotion and relegation happening”. He stressed.

Don Garbet further added that the playoffs system is a unique feature of how American sports are organized.

“ We have the playoff system and it provides a level of competitive balance which no league has. We have the ability to develop a competition format that is very different from anyone around the world and we have confidence that it is the right one for us” he opined.
