PROMOTING ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH TREE PLANTING AND SPORTS: A VISION BY ETHIOPIAN PRIME MINISTER ABIY AHMED

Chris Kators - In an era marked by the urgent need to address climate change, promote environmental sustainability, and foster social cohesion, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed last weekend unveiled a visionary approach that married the unifying power of sports in promoting tree planting by organizing a soccer-friendly match at Friendship Park which was one of the major highlights of Shenen Africa Festival.

The weekend-long program featured a selected African legends team, including renowned players such as Kanu Nwankwo, Henri Camara, Daniel Amokachi, and Taribo West, against an all-Ethiopian selected side. https://www.facebook.com/share/r/jUwdr6Ttq6w7je2H/

Remarkably, the Prime Minister played for the Ethiopian team, leading them to a 5-3 win over the selected African legend’s team, displaying his skill and passion for the game. 

Prime Minister Abiy who aims to create a greener, more harmonious Ethiopia through his Green Legacy initiative launched in 2019 has planted more than 32.5 billion seedings across Ethiopia showcasing his commitment to environmental sustainability.
