RED BULLS DOMINATE NYCFC IN FIRST HUDSON RIVER DERBY PLAYOFF MATCH, ADVANCE TO EASTERN CONFERENCE FINAL

The New York Red Bulls delivered a commanding performance in the first-ever Hudson River Derby clash during the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, defeating their arch-rivals New York City FC 2-0 in Saturday’s Eastern Conference Semifinal at Citi Field. With the win, the Red Bulls not only secured bragging rights but also punched their ticket to the Eastern Conference Final. 

The Red Bulls will await the result of Sunday’s matchup between Orlando City SC and Atlanta United to determine their opponent in the Eastern Conference finals. If Orlando (No. 4 seed) advances, the Red Bulls (No. 7 seed) will travel to the final. However, should Atlanta (No. 9 seed) pull off another upset, New York will host the decisive match next weekend. 

Early Goals Set the Tone 

The Red Bulls wasted no time seizing control of the match, scoring twice in the opening 25 minutes. Felipe Carballo delivered a stunning long-range strike that soared past NYCFC goalkeeper Matt Freese, giving the visitors an early lead.  

Moments later, Dante Vanzeir capitalized on Emil Forsberg’s expertly delivered corner kick, slotting home the second goal and doubling New York’s advantage. 

Defensive Resilience 

Despite being heavily outshot 25-8, the Red Bulls held firm against NYCFC’s relentless pressure. Goalkeeper Carlos Coronel was pivotal, making six crucial saves to deny Alonso Martínez and NYCFC’s attacking efforts. Additionally, Thiago Martins’ late header hit the post, ensuring the Red Bulls maintained their clean sheet.

The Red Bulls’ strong defensive performance and clinical finishing have propelled them into the Eastern Conference Final, a stage they last reached in 2018. With their playoff momentum building, New York now prepares for the ultimate test as they inch closer to a potential MLS Cup berth.
