In a thrilling opening to the round one of 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs, Los Angeles FC edged past the Vancouver Whitecaps with a 2-1 victory at home.

LAFC’s Gabonese star forward, Denis Bouanga, opened the scoring with a composed finish from the penalty spot in the 30th minute giving the hosts a crucial early lead.

LAFC maintained control, Vancouver came close in equalizing but the woodworks denied the visitors few times. LAFC extended their advantage in the 57th minute when Cristian Olivera found the back of the net with a well-taken goal, leaving Vancouver on the back foot.

Despite LAFC’s strong lead, Vancouver’s Ryan Gauld gave the visitors hope with a late goal in stoppage time (90’+5’). However, it was too little too late, and LAFC held on to secure the win in the first game of best of 3 series.

Reacting to the penalty call on Tristan Blackmon who the VAR adjudged to have used his hand to block a goal bound shot, Vancouver Whitecaps manager, Vanni Sartin said

“From what I’ve seen it looks really close but yeah it is, what it is. The VAR is for this kind of situation. I will watch it again but I’m not in the position to comment if it was a mistake or not a mistake.”

This win marks a positive start for LAFC in their playoff campaign, as they look to build momentum and advance further. They will travel to BC Place for game 2 of best the of 3 series on November 3rd.
