NPFL: SUNSHINE STARS ENDS WINLESS RUN, DENT RIVERS UNITED’S CONTINENTAL HOPES IN AKURE

Sunshine stars of Akure recorded an emphatic 1-0 win against continental hopefuls River United on Sunday to boost their chances of league survival.

The fixture which was a rescheduled Matchday 27 game due to Rivers United's Continental engagement, saw the hosts end a winless run of six games in the league in their pursuit of a Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) safety this season.

Despite, a slow start to the game for the home side at the Akure township stadium, Sunshine stars got their noses in front eight minutes after the hour mark when 20-year-old forward Ibrahim Yusuf notched his fourth goal of the season.

Rivers United who are out of the title race their defeat to Remo Stars fell to their eleventh league defeat of the season.

The defeat at Sunshine Stars left Rivers United eleventh on the log. They will tackle Abia Warriors in Umuahia on Wednesday in their sixth rescheduled fixture as they hope to bounce back to winning ways after a four-game winless run.

While Sunshine Stars will next face Bendel Insurance after the league's resumption on the 25th of this month, moved to the tip of the relegation table in 17th with the victory, leveled on points with sixteen the place Bayelsa united, one point off fifteenth place Doma united and two points off Rivers united who sits in eleventh on the log.
